Interview with Katie Martin, Founder and Manager

Why did you start your own business?

I fell in love with accent modification and pronunciation work when I was in college. Since I live in a city with a large university that attracts many international students and professionals, I knew that there was a great need in my area. When I graduated, I decided to be brave, follow my dreams, and start my own business. That was back in 2009!  I have also branched out farther to provide training in public speaking and related areas.

Why the name Dovetail?

The verb " to dovetail" means to connect or to join something harmoniously. I chose this name to represent my company because I believe that communication is the foundation for a strong connections. It connects us to the people we love, our work, vital resources, and so much more!.  Without the means to communicate, people may become isolated and it is difficult to thrive.  However, when people communicate and connect, they become stronger, and the community around them becomes enriched because they are a part of it.

Why did you choose this profession?

I pursued a degree in speech-language pathology because it combines two of my main interests: helping people and learning about languages.  When I found out about the branch of accent modification and communication coaching within my field, I knew it was a perfect fit!   I have a special talent for teaching pronunciation, which is what many non-native English speakers are looking for.  I love showing people who say "I'll never be able to say that word!" that they are mistaken!

What are your qualifications?

I received a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Germanic Languages and Literature, as well as a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Illinois. I earned a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, and have additional certifications in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the Compton P-ESL Accent Modification Method. I have also completed focused accent and pronunciation courses with LDS and Associates, the Institute for Cross-Cultural Training at Wheaton College, and Speech and Voice Enterprises.

Who have you worked with in the past?

I have worked with many university students over the years, as well as with university administrators and professors. Other clients include IT professionals, doctors, pastors, stay-at-home moms, and even motivational speakers. My clients have come from the United States, China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Iran, Israel, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Russia, Ghana, Columbia…and probably a few other countries that I'm forgetting.

What languages do you speak?

I am a native English speaker and I am fluent in German.  Most people are surprised to find out that I don't have an American English accent when I speak German, even though I actually didn't start learning German until I was in high school. I have also learned a little Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic.

What countries have you been to or would you like to go to?

I grew up in the U.S. and have lived abroad in Germany and Bahrain. I have also visited Canada, Mexico, most of Western Europe, and Estonia. I would love to visit Asia someday soon. I like to visit places where I know a friend, so that they can show me exciting things about their city, country, and culture that tourists usually don't get to see.

What do you do in your free time?

I love spending time at home with my family, including my husband, daughter, son, and our two dogs. I also enjoy growing vegetables and flowers in my garden, swimming, and spending time with friends.
